LEADERSHIP PROFILE

DIRECTOR OF RETAIL for GOODWILL INDUSTRIES OF NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND WISCONSIN STATELINE AREA, INC.  (Rockford, IL)

Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois and Wisconsin Stateline Area, Inc. (GINI) is seeking a new Director of Retail to oversee its $16+ million dollar donated goods retail operation.  GINI covers an 18-county area in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Rockford, IL serves as headquarters, and it is one of 156 Goodwill agencies under the auspices of Goodwill Industries International (GII).  GINI operates eleven retail stores; a post-retail, recycling, and logistics operation; and an e-commerce program.  Retail revenues assist in helping the organization meet its mission goals which include programs in the areas of workforce development, supported work programs, education, tax preparation and financial literacy. GINI ensures that there is at least one mission program in every community that has a retail presence.

The Relationships

The Director of Retail reports directly to the President of the organization. This position oversees the Associate Director of Retail, two District Managers, the Warehouse & Logistics Manager, and the E-Commerce Manager.  There are over 450 employees throughout thirteen different locations working for the retail operation. With oversight from the President, the Retail Director interacts on a regular basis with a Board Committee dedicated to retail operations.

The Outcomes

GINI seeks an experienced and results oriented Director of Retail with the ability to navigate and lead with success the changing environment of donated goods retail. The following outcomes will be expected of the Director of Retail:

  • In-depth understanding of the dynamic environment of donated goods retail, donated goods post-retail operations, and e-commerce. Ability to innovate to secure long term success of these operations.
  • Engages with Goodwill’s leadership team to leverage the value that each member brings to Goodwill retail.
  • Ensures the retail operation is aligned with the Goodwill Industries International financial ratios.
  • Ensures operational efficiencies through kaizen and optimizing the structure and responsibilities of key retail leadership team members.
  • Creates a strong, inclusive work culture that encourages learning and growing bench strength.
  • Sets plans for the future to best navigate obstacles such as growing labor costs.
  • Implements technology that allows for quicker, more accurate decisions.
  • Major stakeholder in the strategic planning process and has the ability to deliver on strategic objectives.

 

The Position Description

Accountability:

Responsible for all aspects of donated goods retail operations including retail store sales, aftermarket retail, transportation and logistics, and e-commerce.  This position oversees and is accountable for retail leadership and innovation; sales and profitability; strategic planning and alignment; operational growth; e-commerce; management of real estate and facility improvements; aftermarket salvage and recycling; and logistics/trucking operations.

Responsibilities:

  1. Promotes organization’s mission through all business activities and objectives.
  2. Participates in strategic planning process and strategic goal delivery.
  3. Motivates, coaches and leads management teams to achieve identified key business metrics and expected performance results.
  4. Leverage sales and profit opportunities.
  5. Grows and innovates key retail initiatives such as e-commerce, integrating online & brick-and-mortar retail, and improved data utilization.
  6. Maintains all real estate relationships and makes recommendations on future retail real estate transactions including store openings/remodels/lease renewals/moving locations/real estate purchases/store closures.
  7. Maintains all retail facilities ensuring planned operational improvements as needed.
  8. Forecasts and executes metrics that include productivity, resource allocation, and profitability.
  9. Creates annual operating budget for all retail related operations.
  10. Engages with resources to optimize the customer experience and internal departmental relationships.
  11. Oversees trucking and aftermarket retail operations to ensure maximum productivity and revenues.
  12. Plans and delivers the strategy surrounding the consistent flow of donated goods to all store locations.The above listed responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.  They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities or duties required.  Incumbents will be expected to perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • 5 years of experience in retail/operational management with multi-site experience.
    • Outstanding leadership skills with the ability to mentor and lead by example.
    • Successful track record in increasing sales and production, driving profits and meeting strategic goals.
    • Proven ability to network, recruit, train, develop and promote quality people.
    • Strong analytical, planning, interpersonal and problem-solving skills with a working knowledge of profit and loss statements.
    • Energetic, results oriented and competitive with a drive to succeed.
    • Strong merchandising and operational skills.
    • Ability to travel to stores on a regular schedule.
    • Ability to make timely and informed decisions and understanding of when to escalate issues.
    • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple issues/tasks.
    • Ability to appropriately maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
    • Ability to work effectively with all persons along the social continuum including individuals with barriers.
    • Exhibit the highest level of business acumen and ethics.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Functional use of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

    Physical Requirements:

    Ability to stand, walk, sit, use hands, talk, and hear. May do occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. Valid driver’s license and reliable, insured automobile required. Must be able to travel to outside meetings and multiple communities/retail locations.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties of the position.

    Environment:

    The work is primarily conducted in the Administrative Building with travel to all Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois locations and outside meetings.  Noise levels are minimal.  Temperatures may vary if traveling to outside locations.   Hours are primarily day time hours with occasional weekend or evening work.
