Director of Fund Development


The Director of Fund Development (DFD) is responsible for planning, execution, control, and evaluation of fundraising, public relations, and outreach as it relates to generating funding for the organization. The DFD works closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and Fund Development staff to enhance and support the overall mission of the organization and to meet the budget and program funding needs of Goldie B. Floberg Center.

The DFD is responsible for fund development for these purposes:

§ Operating support

§ Major projects, including programs

§ Future capital campaigns

§ Endowment fund

§ Planned giving program

One-quarter of the position is dedicated to communications and outreach which includes:

§ Newsletter publication

§ Management of media relations and representation of the organization or preparation of the CEO and Directors to represent the agency to the media

§ Publication of documents to include fundraising collateral, other marketing and multimedia materials, annual reports

Special Events

Plan and lead special and donor appreciation events annually


§ Provide strategic direction of all campaigns and activities related to annual, major, and planned giving support

§ Develops annual development budget

§ Responsible for grant research, writing, and reporting

§ Responsible for the collection of all donor and prospect information in the database, including supervision of all gift entries to ensure accuracy

§ Manages direct mail program and identifies and coordinates direct mail vendor

§ Identifies cultivates and solicits major gift support

§ Ensures proper donor recognition and stewardship

§ Prepares reports on campaign progress

§ Acts as liaison to finance department

Physical Demands: The Director of Fund Development position involves office work with frequent sitting, typing, and reading from computer screens. The Director of Development must also be able to communicate using a phone and email. The position also involves regular interactions with members of the community and thus involves some driving.

Schedule: The Director of Fund Development generally works Monday through Friday, on the first shift. Occasional weekend and evening hours are required in order to manage the direct mail campaign, participate in community outreach, fundraising, public relations activities, and other job responsibilities. This is a full-time hybrid position that requires a staff member to work a minimum of 80 hours per pay two-week period. Hybrid means that due to the nature of the essential functions, a significant amount of work may be done at home or in the office. Generally, it is expected that 50% of work time be spent in the office though this can be adjusted with the approval of the President/CEO.

Telecommuting: Telecommuting for this position is approved for this position in accordance with policy 502 Work Schedules.

Essential Requirements:

§ Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in key fundraising position.

§ Two years experience in grant research and writing.

§ Proficient in word-processing and spreadsheet software.

§ Familiarity with fundraising software (preference given to Raiser’s Edge.)

§ Strong written, story-telling, and personal communication skills.

§ Working knowledge of government and private foundation grant programs and associated rules, regulations, and requirements.

§ Must be at least 21 years old.

§ Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive to various community functions.

§ Must successfully pass all required background checks.

§ Innovative thinker with strong analytical and fund raising-creative capabilities.

§ Must be passionate about the Center’s mission and comfortable speaking about the Center in front of individuals and groups.

§ Must adhere to the ethical principles set forth by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and their Donors Bill of Rights.

§ Must be able to meet the physical demands described in the Working Conditions & Physical Demands section of this profile.

Essential Job Functions:

§ Create and implement a strategy for the annual, major, and planned giving

§ Establish long-term goals and objectives for each contribution category.

§ Research and analyze individual donors and prospects in order to develop strategies for gift growth or acquisition.

§ Serve as primary contact for individual donors at $1,000 and above, as well as planned gift donors.

§ Establish clear lines of inter-departmental communication and coordinated donor prospect management.

§ Develop donor appreciation and cultivation events and activities

§ Responsible for the collection of all donor and prospect information in the database to include supervision of all gift entries to ensure accuracy.

§ Monitors and supervises fund development staff to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of data entry.

§ Monitors to ensure the timely acknowledgment of all gifts.

§ Working with development staff and software support, implement methods to capture all pertinent donor/prospect information in the database.

§ Determine donor segmentation, prospect targets, donor research, and tracking mechanisms.

§ Respects the confidentiality of all records.

§ Develops annual budget for fund development

§ Working with CEO and finance department sets realistic annual revenue goals

§ Continual monitoring of fund development revenue and expenses

§ Locate, research, and write grants for government, community, project and business development programs

§ Research grant opportunities to help fund projects and programs

§ Write proposals in accordance with grantor standards or requirements

§ Establish a working network with funding agency administrators

§ Make presentations before potential grantors and follow up status reports

§ Manage direct mail program and coordinate with direct mail vendor

§ Contact to the direct mail vendor

§ Leads donor database segmentation

§ Develops all in-house annual giving mailings

§ Develop and manage community outreach and volunteer strategy

§ Appoints leadership for giving societies

§ Involves board of directors in “thanking” process

§ Works with Communications Specialist to develop volunteer events

§ Identifies cultivates and solicits major gift support

§ Develops realistic individual major gift goals

§ Prepares moves and solicitation strategies for each prospect

§ Serves as part of solicitation team on major donor solicitation

§ Ensures proper donor recognition and stewardship

§ Manages donor recognition events

§ Develops stewardship program for all donors

§ Prepares bi-monthly reports on fundraising activity

§ Monitors progress to goal

§ Reports progress to goal to fund development committee

§ Oversees special events

§ Responsible for event solicitations

§ Develops query criteria for the invite list

§ Manages creation of cultivation events

§ Evaluates results of all special events

§ All other duties as assigned by the President/CEO.
